Fossil Energy raises a paradox: plastic comes from oil, which itself comes from ancient fossilised organic life. The tons of plastic that wash up on the world's beaches among our contemporary shellfish are therefore made up of the ancestors of the latter. Thus our plastic waste is destined to become the fossils of tomorrow.
This stoup draws on religious iconography to remind us that fossil fuels are a precious, even sacred, resource in our globalised economy. And that they are becoming dangerously scarce.
Energie Fossile was made entirely from recycled and reused materials. In a desire by the artist to be at one with his medium, the shaping process was carried out exclusively using art craft techniques: modelling, moulding, direct cutting and patina.
The mould was made in a recycled aluminium foundry, itself an exhibition piece (Matrix for Venus) which required three months of work and 30 kg of aluminium scrap.
