All the lots selected for this unique auction have in common that they offer a new perspective on the value of materials and their life cycle. The mediums or techniques chosen by the artists minimise, consciously or unconsciously, their impact on the environment, by limiting the use of toxic materials, by reducing the quantity of material or energy, by using recycled or upcycled materials, collected in the forest or in a car scrapyard, on a deconstruction site or in a craftsman's workshop, without ever sacrificing anything to the creative freedom and power.
Since 2017, ChangeNOW have been committed to putting artists at the heart of the event. The Art for Change programme is now taking on a new dimension thanks to the trust of Christie's France.
This sale presents slow and powerful works by artists who shape what is already there and create what has been created. The discarded material is diverted, modelled, sublimated and re-sourced. The works are neither "green" nor militant; they do not approach ecology as a theme, but integrate it into the creative process.
"Sustainable art" is a deliberately provocative notion that questions the cycles of an industry navigating between practices and narratives, between the studio and the exhibition, between the hands and the eyes.
